<\/span>I\u2019m 36 and have had severe bruxism for at least 20 years. My grinding and clenching were so bad that at 30, my teeth had been worn down into short and flat little nubs. I knew I needed to do something about it, but I also knew that a full mouth restoration would cost close to a year\u2019s salary \u2014 at that particular time in my life.

I had hugely disappointing experience in 2013 with a West Seattle dentist who only offered me one treatment option \u2014 a \u201ccheap fix\u201d. He rebuilt my worn teeth with composite, which started to chip off and turn yellow within six months. I have never smoked, but I found myself with tarnished smoker\u2019s teeth. Despite my attempt to seek help for the issue, I had still not been offered the appropriate solution. I was so ashamed of my smile (and my poor choice of dental professional).

The aesthetic state of my teeth wasn\u2019t the only issue \u2014 the dysfunction of my actual bite was having a dramatically negative impact on my quality of life. It became clear that I would need the help of a highly skilled prosthodontist (not an opportunistic general dentist!).

I am so incredibly lucky to have met Dr. Buglione. At the first visit, his evaluations were extremely thorough and he reassured me that there was indeed a functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable way to address my concerns. He talked me through various treatment options, explaining the risks and benefits of each, ensuring that I could make a well-informed decision. I decided against orthognathic surgery and orthodontic treatment (although both options were presented) and chose to proceed with having the worn composite buildups on all of my teeth replaced with more durable (and beautiful) zirconium crowns. My bite would be redesigned in a way that took into account both the shape of my face and also my bruxism issues, and the materials for the restorations would be chosen accordingly.

The entire process took several months, and many of the visits took the entire day \u2014 because of how much preparation each tooth underwent, and the challenging nature of my case overall. I was surprised to find that I actually looked forward to going to the dentist each week! \u201cDr. B\u201d, as he came to be called, was ultra-conscientious about the work, striving for the best possible outcome, diligently consulting other experts about my case, and never taking the easy way out. He was also sensitive to my well-being as a patient at every stage in the process. I was treated like a human, not a mouth with teeth, and I felt I was a co-driver along the way, with an active role to play in shaping my care plan.

Dr. B is not only a skilled practitioner \u2014 he is also an all-round wonderful human. There was much laughter and storytelling throughout the many hours I spent in the dental chair. When the last crown was put in, I stepped out of the chair with the hugest grin on my face, and felt an enormous wave of relief wash over me. My smile is perfect. My bite feels comfortable and natural. My dental care was compassionate, intelligent, evidence-based, and full of heart.
